On 9 December 2019, the Permanent Mission of Slovenia to the UN, in partnership with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), organized an event to launch the 4th phase (2020-2024) of the World Programme for Human Rights Education, dedicated to youth, as part of the celebration of Human Rights Day 2019. The Human Rights Council has adopted a related Plan of Action in September 2019, to start on 1 January 2020. The event was co-organized by the Human Rights Council’s Governmental Platform on Human Rights Education and Training. The exhibition “Transforming Lives: The Power of Human Rights Education” was displayed at the venue, co-organized by SGI and the NGO Working Group on Human Rights Education and Learning (NGO WG on HREL).
After remarks from Ambassador Sabina Stadler of the Permanent Mission of Slovenia to the UN and Kate Gilmore, UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, young speakers took the floor. Elisa Gazzotti of SGI, who also serves as Chair of the NGO WG on HREL, spoke as a human rights educator and advocate, emphasizing the importance of translating commitments at the UN into action to ensure the realization of the rights of all people, particularly youth. Closing remarks were given by Ambassador Sek Wannamethee of the Permanent Mission of Thailand to the UN.
Following the event, Gazzotti and other youth speakers were interviewed by the OHCHR.
