Environment and Climate Justice

Climate justice resonates with Buddhist philosophy and embodies the spirit of standing with the most marginalized in society. In response to the current global emergency, the SGI is working on awareness-raising and advocacy with UN agencies, NGOs and other faith groups.

Global Call for the Universal Recognition of the Human Right to a Healthy Environment

SGI is part of the Global Call endorsed by more than 1,100 civil society organizations, local communities, Indigenous Peoples and youth groups. The recognition of this right has also been called for by the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment and several UN Agencies, including OHCHR, UNEP, UNICEF, UNESCO.

  • SGI supported the Call to Action for the Human Rights Council (HRC) to realize the Right of all Children to a Healthy Environment and endorsed a statement calling for this right to be recognized without delay at HRC46.
Call for Establishing a New Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Climate Change

As part of the Geneva Interfaith Forum on Climate Change, Environment and Human Rights (GIF), SGI calls for the establishment of a new special procedures mandate at the HRC to focus on human rights and climate change.
