Interfaith Statement of Support for UN Secretary-General’s Disarmament Agenda

On 24 May 2018, UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced his new disarmament agenda entitled Securing Our Common Future at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. At the launch, Mr. Guterres reminded the audience that the United Nations was created with the goal of eliminating war as an instrument of foreign policy. He stressed: “Disarmament prevents and ends violence. Disarmament supports sustainable development. And disarmament is true to our values and principles.”

The new Agenda focuses on three priority areas: weapons of mass destruction, conventional weapons, and new battlefield technologies.

Upon the launch of the Agenda, the NGO Committee on Disarmament, Peace and Security in New York, which SGI is a member of, coordinated the drafting and issuing of an interfaith statement of support, which reads in part: “We believe that the time is long overdue for the elimination of nuclear weapons, and we believe that recent developments make it essential that the issue receive prompt and urgent attention.” The statement has been endorsed by groups of Christian, Quaker, Muslim, Jewish and Buddhist traditions, including the SGI.
