Global Call for the Recognition of the Right to a Healthy Environment

In Sustainable Development by SGI OUNA

On 11 September, more than 950 civil society organizations, social movements, local communities and Indigenous Peoples worldwide issued a Global Call for the UN Human Rights Council to recognize without delay the human right to a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment.

The Call states, in part:

“A healthy environment is essential for human life and dignity. The air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat and the life-sustaining climate we enjoy, all are dependent on healthy, diverse, integral and functioning ecosystems. In view of the global environmental crisis that currently violates and jeopardizes the human rights of billions of people on our planet, global recognition of this right is a matter of utmost urgency. As we all know, there are no human rights on a dead planet.”

SGI helped draft the Call as part of the campaign and endorsed it from the start.

This Global Call was acknowledged during the 45th Session of the Human Rights Council, when 5 States announced that they have begun consultations to pave the way towards international recognition of the human right to a clean, safe, healthy and sustainable environment.
