During the 46th session of the UN Human Rights Council, SGI actively supported the call for the recognition of the right of all to a safe, clean, healthy, and sustainable environment. As part of the Global Coalition for the formal recognition of the right to a healthy environment, SGI co-sponsored a joint oral statement calling for this right to be recognized without delay.
During this session, SGI together with other members of the Geneva Interfaith Forum on Climate Change, Environment and Human Rights (GIF) issued a written and an oral statement (text and video) actively advocating for the establishment of a new Special Procedures mandate on human rights and climate change.
On 26 March, Alexandra Goossens-Ishii of SGI helped organize and moderate a side event (report and video) on behalf of the GIF, which was attended by more than 120 participants. The event gathered the voices and perspectives from small island states, Indigenous Peoples, young people, and faith groups to urgently address climate change as a human rights issue. The event highlighted the critical need to bring the voices of those most affected to the fore, and for the Human Rights Council to lead a more ambitious climate agenda grounded in respect for human rights for all.
