We express our most sincere condolences to all who have suffered a loss during this unprecedented time in history and deep sympathy to everyone who has been impacted. We also extend our heartfelt gratitude and respect to all health workers and others risking their lives on the frontlines around the world. At this difficult period, when people are challenging feelings of fear, anxiety, and isolation, it is inspiring to see so many demonstrating resilience, compassion and solidarity.
Our Buddhist philosophy of “changing poison into medicine” teaches that even the darkest and most desperate of times can contain the seeds of new learning and possibility. Especially relevant now in light of our current circumstances are the imperatives of human security, a worldview rooted in a vital sense of our interconnectedness, and a universal respect for human dignity – all of which can strengthen humanity’s indomitable network of global citizens.
We choose hope and move forward with our renewed resolve. We support the UN Secretary-General’s call for a global ceasefire and encourage others to add their voices to this campaign to silence the guns. In the spirit of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, our common hope for humanity’s future, let us ensure that absolutely no one is left behind in our response to this global pandemic and its aftermath, and to contribute toward building more equal, inclusive and sustainable societies. Our collective efforts to foster the culture of peace constitute the surest way to transform our world.
