From 29 to 31 January, Earth Charter International (ECI) hosted an international conference titled “Leading the Way to Sustainability 2030: Education, the Earth Charter and the Sustainable Development Goals” at the University for Peace in Costa Rica. Over 100 participants from 18 countries shared pedagogical approaches, materials and lessons learned in the search for transformational education processes for sustainable development and global citizenship.
Joan Anderson and Hiro Sakurai of SGI joined a session on non-formal education and co-presented on the “Seeds of Hope Exhibition: The Role and Impact of Non-formal Education Tools.” Representing the Soka Institute Amazon Environmental Research Center in Manaus, Brazil, Tais Tokusato, environmental education coordinator, and Monique Tiezzi, international relations advisor, also outlined their education projects such as the Environmental Academy for local schoolchildren. Tadashi Nagai of SGI and Christine Lacayo, ECI youth coordinator, conducted an interactive presentation on the Mapting app.
