At the 37th session of the Human Rights Council, the NGO Working Group on Human Rights Education and Learning (NGO WG on HREL), which SGI is a part of, submitted a written statement “Proposals for the focus of the 4th Phase of the World Programme for Human Rights Education.” The statement proposed that as “critical agents of change,” youth should be the target sector for the fourth phase. This was in response to a call by HRC and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) seeking the views of all relevant stakeholders on what should be the target sectors, focus areas and thematic human rights issues in preparation for the fourth phase.
Additionally, the NGO WG on HREL organized a side event at the Palais de Nations on 6 March 2018, co-sponsored by the Platform for Human Rights Education and Training and the UNESCO Liaison Office in Geneva.
The panel discussion enabled various stakeholders to share their views on the event topic: “World Programme for Human Rights Education – What focus for the fourth phase?” and also provided an opportunity to address the progress and challenges in the ongoing third phase of the World Programme, which aims to strengthen the implementation of the first two phases and promote human rights training for media professionals and journalists.
Speakers included representatives from UNESCO, OHCHR, the Permanent Mission of Italy, national human rights institutions, and civil society.
